In 1815, John, his wife, and five children left from Fort Appin for
Canada, a trip that took 16 weeks of ocean sailing. They took the
St. Lawrence River to Lake Ontario to Lake Erie, bound for Port Talbot.
A storm came and the ship docked at what is now Port Stanley, Ontario.
The four eldest children got on shore, but the ship was forced back
out by the storm. These four children, Hugh (aged 15 at the time), Mary, Nancy, and John, were alone for four days before the ship came back to port. They survived by eating wild berries and sleeping in unused pigpens. After being reunited with his children, John walked to Port Talbot, where Colonel Talbot was residing, an presented a letter from the colonel's brother, who was still in Scotland, and was given 400 acres of land on Talbot Road in Tilbury East Township. |
